When seen in profile images, this bird beak has a distinct bracket shape (see, for instance, 1978.412.90a, b). Below, a small nose with curling nostrils is carved atop a downturned beak. In Maya art, this eye is a diagnostic feature of shining, solar, and/or resplendent supernatural beings. Ux Yop Hu’n is shown cross-eyed, his squared pupils looking inward toward a furrowed brow. This figure is also frequently referred to in the literature as “the foliated Jester God.” His forehead is infixed with a hieroglyphic sign that translates as ajaw, or ruler (a schematic face comprised of two dots for eyes and one for a mouth). This apple-green jade ornament represents the avian face of Ux Yop Hu’n (“Three Leaves Paper” or “Three-Leaf-Paper”) a complex supernatural being that personified the paper headband worn by ancient Maya rulers. ![]()

Throughout her life, reading and writing became an increasingly important mode of self-expression. Even though Lorde knows, from childhood, her predilection for women, she has no language with which to express her identity. Being a black lesbian, the author never feels like she belongs, both as a black woman in an overtly racist and misogynist America and living as a lesbian in an era prior to the word “lesbian”being regularly used. The book follows the exploration of her identity as a lesbian in the 1950s. Born to West Indian immigrants, Lorde grows up as a black child in New York City in the 1930s and 1940s. ![]() ![]() ![]() Told over the course of six years and one weekend, Every Summer After is a big, sweeping nostalgic look at love and the people and choices that mark us forever. Claude’s lack of excitement and desire to indulge his ideals compels him to want to leave his school and hometown for a more metropolitan scene. “It wasn’t American to explain oneself, you didn’t have to!” (68) He also finds his family, especially his mother and brother, to be too religious and lacking in passion. While he loves the land and his immigrant farmer neighbors, he does not get on well with his family.Ĭather explores Claude’s desire to escape his rural family whom he finds uncommunicative, as they view discussing one’s opinions as pompous, something only politicians do. He feels contradictorily towards his home life, “both loved and hated to come home” (70). Claude attends a Christian college but would rather attend the State University in Lincoln, as he finds his classes and professors dull. Claude lives more in his head than with his body, a temperament not conducive to a life of long days and hard work on a farm.
